Overview
The
body responds to mechanical forces, such as work against gravity or resistance
exercise, by remodeling bone and muscle tissue to accommodate new functional
demands. These accommodations result in greater bone density and muscle
strength. With age and in the absence of weight-bearing activity, bone loss
(osteopenia or osteoporosis) and muscle loss (sarcopenia) ensue, which lead to injuries, reduced quality of life and large medical bills for many older individuals.
Current practice
Current treatments directed at osteoporosis
are predominantly based on inhibition of bone resorption by osteoclasts, rather
than promotion of bone formation by osteoblasts, and are limited in the
duration of their use. There are no currently available treatments for
sarcopenia related to frailty.

The Vibe Approach
The musculoskeletal system must be able to respond to mechanical signals and to changes in its environment. Special mechanosensitive bone cells sense these signals and produce a number of proteins that lead to bone remodeling and strengthening for optimum mechanical performance. |
